FATAL ACCIDENT.
13 victims are dead following a road accident at Bonje on the Mombasa Nairobi highway.
The accident involved a lorry, matatu and Toyota surf.
“The lorry was headed to Mombasa when it veered off the road to the on coming lane where it rammed head to head with the matatu which was heading to Kaloloni carrying passengers from Kongowea market and Toyota surf pushing the matatu and the Toyota caravan 100 meters from the crush spot” said the traffic commander Mr Omukata.
The Toyota caravan was trapped below the actos lorry belonging to Shiva Carriers limited and the matatu was completely crushed.
“It is very sad loosing so many lives at a go” said Mr Omukata
The traffic police commissioner said it was a matter of careless driving and overtaking, drivers not adhering to traffic rules and regulations and human error.
At the scene of the accident were families of the deceased who were crying for the loss of their beloved one
One of the ones who were crying was Josephine Fatuma Gambo; a mother of two kids. One of her child Emily Jilani was involved in the accident. A meter away was Emily’s sister who was wet with tears that she could not even talk.
Emily Jilani 23 year old had taken a short break from the collage where she is studying community development. Her mother had sent her to Kongowea market to do some shopping. She was to finish her studies next year.
“Mwanangu najua nang`ang`ana nlikuwa najua nitapumzika sasa sijui nitafanya nini” said Mrs Josephine in tears.
“The area is identified as a black spot area this is due to the frequent accidents that happen in the area and the rail guards have also been stolen by scrape metal operators.” said one of the residents
“Loosing 13 lives at once is not good drivers should be keen with their driving to avoid such incidences” the first aid officer at the scene Mr Sadik Kakai said.
Mr Sadik called out to all road users to observe the road rules and regulations.
The traffic police commissioner also said that the drivers should observe road rules and regulations to avoid accidents.
