MUHURI SEEKS REMEDY IN THE COURTS.
By EMMANUEL BOAZ The human right organisation named Muslims For Human Right (MUHURI) decides to file a suit against the police for wrongly arrest, torture, malicious prosecution and defamation of Mr Athman Salim. This move comes a days after Mr Athman was set free by the high court of Mombasa after the prosecution said police had no evidence linking him to the June 24 Mishomoroni attack. This is to condemn action of the police taken against Salim Athman for his illegal detention and malicious prosecution following the Mishomoroni grenade attacks. “We would like to condemn the action of the action of the police in the wrongful arrest and detention of Mr Athman on 25th June for allegations of being a terrorist responsible for the Mishomoroni grenade attacks,” said MUHURI`s programs coordinator Mr Yusuf Mwatsefu. Furthermore, Mr Mwatsefu called out to the government to take responsibility to compensate Salim since he is currently not able to resume work and there is very little chances of him doing that because he is in pain. His reputation was also completely tarnished with everybody branding him a terrorist. Mr Athman was taken into detention for 14 days at Nyali Police station from his hospitalbed even before he fully recovered. Despite his cries for being in pain nothing was done to alleviate that therefore experiencing Psychological and physical torture. “I was taken to the hospital once after my step parents came to the station and persisted on me being taken for medication. I did not get the medication altogether since the doctors told me that they were out of drug stock” said Mr Athman while in tears. Mr Athman was accompanied by his step mother and father Rehema Karembo Tsongo and Santa Karisa Charo respectively at the MUHURI offices. The police have also been accused of carrying out improper investigations and arbitrary and wrongly arrest of several suspects of terrorism hence subjecting innocent persons to torture and malicious prosecutions in the wake of grenade attacks. Mr Mwatsefu spoke bitterly on this saying that it will only heighten the tension among Kenyans and subject victims to humiliation. The MUHURI strongly opposed the enactment of the antiterrorism bill even after there was an improvement of the bill. “The bill will only encourage impunity and it will only exaggerate violation of human rights and nonconformity in the constitution,” said Mr Mwatsefu. An injustice anywhere is an injustice committed everywhere as an organization MUHURI will remain steadfast in their pursuit for justice for all in this country. Ends
