Protest by the brains worth secondary school.
By EMMANUEL BOAZ The students at the Brains worth secondary school today boycotted classes blaming the school administration for poor learning standards. The Bamburi based Brains worth Secondary School head girl said that the school had only one laboratory that is not well equipped. “We are waiting for the KCSE without doing any practical lesson. How are we expected to pass,” said the school head girl on behalf of fellow students. She added: “We wake up early in the morning and rush to class only to find no teacher in class to attend to us and when we ask the teachers the reason as to why they are not attending classes; they say that they are not paid properly.” “We pay a fee of 30,000 per month and we expect to be taught adequately. When a student has fee areas of even a small balance he or she is sent home. How are we to indulge into the managements issues of paying the teachers? The head girl asked almost in tears. The school head boy Athman said that the health standards of the school were poor, the toilets are full and the kitchen does not meet the required standards. Furthermore the state of both the girls and boys dormitories was pathetic with poor floors and windows. The students say that they can’t sleep with peace due to a lot of wind that blows in the night. Lack of clean drinking water was also a matter of concern since the students said that they drink salty water from the well. Efforts of trying to get to the root of the mater from the school administrator Mr Ramathan Mohammed Ruwange was futile since he declined to speak further saying that he was waiting for the District Education Officer (DEO) to address the matter. The DEO advised me if there is any issue that it is to be addressed, since she is in charge of all the educational matters in Kisauni district and she is part and parcel of this administration. We should wait for her since we have a tripartite meeting between the administration, students and the DEO`s office.” Mr Ruwange said. “I would be shooting myself in the foot if I commit myself to talk about the issue now,” he said. Apart from being a private school the administrator argued that he can not do anything pertaining the situation as per the moment not until the DEO arrived. “I do no wish to extend beyond what I have explained I wish the DEO to contribute exhaustively towards this issue.” Ruwange added.
