HIGH SCHOOL STRIKES ON THE RISE IN COAST PROVINCE.
By EMMANUEL BOAZ
Maandani secondary school students burned down its dorm yesterday at around 9:30 pm when all the 84 boarders were in class undertaking their preps.
“Nothing was savaged from the dorm as it was completely burnt” the head teacher Madam Gharama Getrude said.
“The exact cause of the unrest in the school was not known as the form four students were to do their trial exams on Monday and the form threes to the lower classes were to do the end of term exams, but one of the things that is highly suspected to have caused that was that some of the students did not want exams,” Madam Gharama added.
The head teacher blames the use of mobile phones for the high rate of strikes in high schools as the students use the phones to inform each other about strikes.
Adding to that the education assessment and reaction centre assessor Sebastian Muzungu said that there was a fear in students that the mock will affect their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Schools (KCSE) exams in that if they perform well in the KCSE as opposed to the MOCK, they will be accused of cheating in the exams.
Madam Gharama said that that exams are the ones that are used to assess the students, taste their knowledge, do revision, and a way that students use to prepare to excel.
“Without them doing exams, we can not gauge at which rate they are so we can not assist them as far as results are concerned.” She added.
Furthermore with these trends it will not be easy for us to improve. As long as students take exams they will not perform well and they will fail in the final paper madam Gharama concluded.
Tension and anxiety arouse and the students had to be sent home till the 13th of august when we will be able to ascertain the exact beyond reasonable doubts as to why the students burnt down the Pretoria boys dorm.
Chui dorm of Mazeras high school was also set a blaze at 7:30. efforts to reach the administration were in vain since they ran away after seing the media.
This incidences come in the wake of frequent strikes in Coast province with a lot of strike cases being reported.
